Aka Moon

The experimental jazz trio Aka Moon have come to the IRCAM studios to meet for the first time, a new tool for improv, Omax.

Aka MoonOmax creates a computer "clone" from the live music and the musicians can play with the learning capabilities and unpredictability of the machine.

Extreamly prominent in the worlds of improvisation, opera, and dance especially with Alain Platel's latest creations, this is the first time that Aka Moon attempts a "dialogue with a shadow double".

Luciano Berio

A series dedicated to one of the great names of the twentieth century - Luciano Berio - is at the heart of the 2009 edition.

The festival features three premieres, a lyrical tableau by one of the direct descendants of Berio, Luca Francesconi, a spatialized work by Luis Fernando Rizo-Salom, and The Livre des Illusions by Bruno Mantovani performed by the Orchestre de Paris.

Cursus 2 / Alban Richard

The creative projects by the young composers graduating from the IRCAM Cursus 2 program assert their penchants: antinomical aesthetics, divergent approaches to electronics.

From the imaginings of Aaron Einbond on images of science to the Baroque rhetoric reread by Fernanado Villanueva Carretero to the low tech DIY in With my limbs in the dark, one single idea, that of testing computer systems that become an organic part of the intended music. This idea is also found in the work by Paul Clift and the choreographer Alban Richard where a system of sound diffusion is attached to the dancer's body and to the bodies of the musical instruments.

Organ Concert

Two imposing works for modern organ, dissimilar in every way, set the tone for this evening at Saint-Eustache.

The sound continuum intrinsically linked to the instrument and the hand of the musician determines the effects of speed and surface in the work by Ligeti. The total indifference to the specificity of the organ, to the limits of the instrument or the performer, pulverize all references in Xenakis's work Gmeeoorh. The title of Xenakis's work is a free anagram of "organon": the score for that work was originally written on several staffs for each keyboard, multiplying harmonic overlaps, trees, distortions, expansions.

Flanked by these antinomic adventures of the 20th century are two premieres by young composers, organists themselves. The short liturgy by Philipp Maintz preserves the fresh nature of the nocturnal improvisations at Saint-Eustache. Vox Humana by Hyun-Hwa Cho (musical creation) and Raphaël Thibault (video creation), transmuted to a historic instrument and a gargantuan contemporary synthesizer, made even larger through electronic additive synthesis. The manifestation of the voice surges forth from the ancient organ playing.

The art of the accompaniment

How is it possible to accompany a soloist, to anticipate and follow the movements of the soloist when the accompanist is a computer?

This challenge was decisive in the concept of chamber music with electronics; it passes by a polyphonic "score following" (Vassos Nicolaou), or by a location where the interaction between the autonomous world of electronics and the devilish character of the violin (Marco Stroppa) become poetry. In the copious writing of Dai Fujikura, an orchestra made up of virtual string instruments is born from a single, real viola. This temptation to multiply is the driving force behind the solitary line of Georges Aperghis' oeuvre that draws a "escape path among the tensions from the magnetic fields, the harmonic pressures". The piece Naturale closes the final concert of the Berio series, to "accompany" is not a question of technology, but of the complex aesthetic connection between two worlds. The popular songs from Sicily, recorded by Luciano Berio are attached to an 'intermittent' tape.

"My dream, I know it is utopist, would be to unify traditional folk music and our music - to establish a real passage, perceptible and understandable, between these old popular music, so close to the daily toil of people and our music."

Images of a Work #7

The film "Images of a Work #7" on the creation by Marco Stroppa will be shown before and after the concert and during the intermission.
What is the connection between a poem written by a young e.e. Cummings, the Antescofo score-following software, and a column of loudspeakers in the middle of a stage a few meters from the violinist Hae-Sun Kang? The new film in the Images of a Work series will try to answer using scenes from rehearsals of the new composition by the Italian composer, hist    whist (2009), as well as interviews with those who took part in the creation of this work in the IRCAM studios.
A documentary written and produced by Nicolas Donin and Benoît Martin.

L'air d'autres planètes

"I breath of the air of other planets." The aspiration of the poem by Stefan Georg, put to music by Arnold Schoenberg in his second quartet, irresistibly evokes the suspension of tonality and the advances made in parallel by Vassily Kandisky towards abstraction.

Barbara HanniganThe work Erinnerung by Denis Cohen points to Schoenberg's orchestral works, reminiscent of the founding chord of Farben. The other premiere on this evening's program borrows the unique formation of a voice with a quartet from Schoenberg. Operspective Hölderlin by Philippe Schœller explores the stage invention in terms of the possibilities of depth of field, of the virtual horizon, or of the dynamic opening the frontal stage offered by the WFS system (Wave Field Synthesis), a new instrument for the projection of sonic energy.

What meridian is common to the poem, music, and to the world of technology? What correspondences are possible? An answer given by Schoenberg remains, "If proximity makes the difference stand out, distance makes common traits stand out."
